Maeson Green Awarded Inaugural John Burgan Entrepreneurship Award from Youngstown State University
(Canfield, OH) 05/27/20 – Burgan Real Estate, the Mahoning Valley’s independently, family-owned real estate company for 43 years, announced today Maeson Green is the winner of the John Burgan Entrepreneurship Award. The $2,400 award, donated by Patrick Burgan in honor of his father, John Burgan, was established for Youngstown State University Williamson College of Business Administration students who believed they had a great idea for a new business. Green, a Sophomore Management Major and graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, was awarded the cash prize for his plan to support the expansion of his business, MBG Restoring, LLC., a company specializing in the restoration of sneakers.
“We hoped that this award would bring forth ideas and creativity from students to live out a dream they had of starting or growing their own business, the same way my father helped me when I was just 10 years old,” said Patrick Burgan, co-broker and second-generation owner of Burgan Real Estate, who created this award. “While we were blown away by the ideas and thought that went into all of the entries, Maeson clearly separated himself with his vision, mission and passion to create a business that is a dream of his by helping make the lives of others better. We are excited to recognize Maeson for all of his hard work and for setting such a high standard for future recipients of this for award.”
Established in 2015, Maeson Green founded MBG Restoring, LLC., as a way to, “make shoes look brand new.” His passion for sneakers led to a business idea that has now grown to him restoring more than 1,200 pairs of shoes for residents of the Mahoning Valley to renowned business agents and professional athletes across the country. The money won will be put towards the expansion of replaced to deliver an online store and pop-up shop to take restoration orders for a wider array of products including different types of shoes, purses, hats and watch link removal. The money will also offer the opportunity to purchase new sneakers in an online store setting.
“It is an honor to receive this award that is tied to a great company, like Burgan Real Estate, and man in John Burgan,” said Green. “This money is going to help us expand our business and it is such a blessing to be given this opportunity to grow my business here in the Mahoning Valley.”
Proposals were due in February of this past year and presentations to a panel of judges were conducted via online video conferencing in April. The 19 entries, submitted from a variety of majors at YSU were evaluated on numerous attributes including feasibility of implementation, assessment of market conditions and demand, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. The 3-5 page proposal outlined the business idea and how the prize of $2,400 would be used to advance the business idea. While businesses did not have to exist in order to be considered, the panelists were impressed by Maeson’s established company and how the money would further his efforts. Maeson’s strategies, outline and passion closely resonated with the morals and values of the namesake of the award.
“I saw a great deal of myself in Maeson,” said Burgan, “but I also saw my father as well.” Maeson’s approach encompassed everything my father taught me about going for my dream and starting my own business. To have my father there with me as we evaluated the entries was a great experience and one I will never forget.”
The idea for this prize goes back to when Patrick was just 10 years old and spoke to his father about a business idea he had to sell custom watches to commemorate an anniversary of an automotive vehicle he liked. John Burgan provided his son with $2,400 to start this business. This early vote of confidence and financial assistance helped Patrick start this first business venture, which sold out of the 100 watches he created. His father helped Patrick invest his profits and at the age of 17, the investment and earnings were used to purchase Patrick’s first house, which ignited his love of real estate, where he now is co-owner of the fastest growing real estate brand in the Mahoning Valley, a company his father started 42 years ago.
Plans for next year’s award is already being discussed and dates for submissions will be provided.
